Antarctica LiveWeather & continental intelligence

Weather, terrain, ice and continental intelligence, in one open data layer.

Structured intelligence for a place where conventional property records don't exist. Click anywhere on the map for what's known at that point. Every value names its source and version, and a field the source doesn't cover stays empty. This is built by the team behind PropData's property API and global property intelligence.

Surface observations (METAR/SPECI) from the Antarctic stations that publish them through NOAA's Aviation Weather Center. PropData checks every 5 minutes and this page refreshes every minute. Most stations report hourly. Rankings cover only stations that reported in the last 3 hours. Not for navigation or flight planning.

What is this?

PropData Antarctica Live, in one paragraph

PropData Antarctica Live combines surface observations from Antarctic weather stations that publish reports through the NOAA Aviation Weather Center with open geospatial layers for research stations and other facilities, named places, protected areas (ASPA and ASMA), historic sites, terrain, ice thickness and ice velocity, daily near-real-time sea-ice concentration, a Landsat satellite mosaic, and historical wildlife records (penguins, seals, whales, seabirds, fish and other marine animals) from rights-cleared biodiversity datasets. Weather reports are checked every five minutes; every other layer keeps its own source, version and provenance.

It is a map and a free API, not a forecast. Station reports describe the few places that report, not the whole continent, and there is no continental average temperature. Wildlife records show what has been recorded near a place, not what is there now, and no record is not evidence of absence. The open data is downloadable as GeoJSON, CSV and Parquet with SHA-256 checksums.

Antarctic weather over the last 24 hours

Each line is one station's own reports. There's no continental average, because a handful of coastal stations and the Pole can't stand in for a continent. Gaps mean the station didn't report.

Source: NOAA / National Weather Service, Aviation Weather Center (public domain). PropData converts the units (knots to m/s, statute miles to metres) and keeps each verbatim report. This isn't an official NWS product and NOAA doesn't endorse it. Station reports only: this is not a forecast, and it's not for navigation.

Continental intelligence

Continental intelligence: what the current snapshot holds

Counts, versions and resolutions below are read from the production manifest (manifest-v2.json). The browser also checks them against the live API.

Provenance

Source truth, not filled gaps

When a source doesn't support a field, PropData leaves it unknown rather than making up an answer. Sources are never merged: REMA and Bedmap3 elevations, and ATS points and boundaries, are each published separately. We drop sources whose redistribution rights we can't verify.

Coverage matrix

What exists here, and what doesn't

This matrix is read live from the production API. Under the Antarctic Treaty System there are no cadastral parcels, private ownership, deeds, mortgages, property tax or sales, so those concepts are not applicable, which is different from missing data.

Each layer is exported from the same normalized snapshot the API serves. Verify files against the SHA-256 values in the manifest. Physical geography and raster intelligence are API-only: get the original vectors from the cited SCAR ADD DOIs, and point values from the API.

Try the Antarctica Open API

Antarctica Open API: one call, the whole continent's context

These are production requests, sent straight from your browser. There's no key, and you'll see real responses. By-location is the flagship endpoint: enter a coordinate and every layer answers on its own terms. The production API docs cover authenticated property endpoints.

No parcels, owners or property records, because Antarctica has none.

    What else can PropData do?

    The PropData platform

Production property intelligence built from authoritative source systems, on the same API infrastructure you just called:

    • Property records
    • Parcel geometry
    • Market intelligence
    • Rent estimates
    • Sales comps
    • Neighborhood & community data
    • Environmental intelligence
    • Country-native property systems

These are PropData platform capabilities in supported markets, not Antarctica features.

    Methodology

Sources and methodology: unknown beats a guess

Each layer keeps its own identity, version and resolution. PropData normalizes layers but never merges them.

    Identities

    Facilities AQ:WIKIDATA:FACILITY:<QID> · named places AQ:WIKIDATA:PLACE:<QID> · protected areas AQ:ATS:ASPA:<n> / AQ:ATS:ASMA:<n> · historic sites AQ:ATS:HSM:<n> · physical features AQ:BAS-ADD:<layer>:v<version>:<fid>. ASPA, ASMA and HSM remain separate types.

    Named geography

Named places come from Wikidata (CC0). The SCAR Composite Gazetteer doesn't state a licence on the dataset itself, so it isn't redistributed. SCAR place IDs appear only where Wikidata records them. Wikidata labels are language labels, not national naming authorities.

    Protected areas

Identity and status come from the live Antarctic Treaty Secretariat database, and boundaries from its latest official shapefile (2024). ASPA 183 and 184, designated in 2026, don't have an official boundary yet, so membership isn't computed for them. De-designated areas are listed with that status and no boundary.

    Terrain and subsurface

Bed, surface, ice thickness and mask come from Bedmap3 v1.0 at 500 m. Values are the cell containing the point, unchanged. Slope is derived from the Bedmap3 surface, and the vertical datum isn't stated by the source. Facility points also keep REMA v2.0 32 m elevations. The two sources are published side by side and never averaged.

    Ice velocity

Velocity is ITS_LIVE v2.1's 2024 annual mosaic. The value is the 120 m source pixel nearest each 480 m cell centre, without averaging. Flow direction is a bearing from geographic north. This is an annual observation product, not real-time movement.

    Physical geography

The surface class (rock outcrop, land or grounded ice, ice shelf or tongue, ocean), coastline distance and grounding-line distance come from SCAR Antarctic Digital Database medium-resolution layers. Distances are geodesic.

One team, more than one hard problem

Antarctica is PropData's first open collection. The production platform runs on the same normalization, provenance and API infrastructure.

    Built for hard data problems

Antarctica is an open collection. The platform goes much deeper.

PropData's production platform delivers property, parcel, market, environmental and location intelligence built from authoritative source systems.

Have a geography or dataset nobody else wants to tackle?

PropData builds structured property and location intelligence from fragmented, difficult and nontraditional source systems.
